MARKETS Fast London Open: Rate calls to fill vacuum left by US holiday
10 minutes ago
It's all about Europe on US Independence Day.
The outcome of monetary policy meetings are due from the European Central Bank and the Bank of England, putting Mark Carney and Mario Draghi centre-stage globally with US markets closed for the public holiday.
The Bank of England will be particularly closely watched, with Mr Carney chairing his first meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee.
Although it is not thought that more stimulus will arrive straight away, there will be a frisson of interest running through dealing rooms before the midday announcement.
More so, the minutes from the meeting will be scrutinised on their publication in a fortnight's time. At the last meeting, only three members of the nine-strong group voted for more stimulus, including the outgoing governor, Lord King.
The ECB is also likely to leave policy on hold at 12.45pm, and Mr Draghi's subsequent press conference should attract more attention.
Ongoing political tension in Portugal and the overnight military coup in Egypt are adding to a sense of nervous caution.
Here are the opening calls from Capital Spreads:
FTSE +12 points at 6242
DAX +19 points at 7848
CAC +8 points at 3710.

The Hang Seng is up 1.6 per cent
The Nikkei 225 is slipping by 0.1 per cent
The Kospi is up 0.8 per cent
The Shanghai Composite is up 1.2 per cent.
